The Bat Lab Wins the 2022 FAZA Nature Conservation Award!!

The Miami Bat Lab, a lab collaboratively founded by Bat Conservation International and Zoo Miami with funding from Florida Power and Light, won the 2022 Florida Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (FAZA) Nature Conservation Award.

This award recognizes outstanding efforts put forth by FAZA members to conserve Florida species and excellence in field conservation efforts to benefit Florida species' involving a FAZA Member institution or collaboration of Member institutions and related partners.

Since its founding in 2018, the Miami Bat Lab has now grown to a conservation network of over 14 agencies and non-profit organizations working together to develop innovative conservation management strategies and apply them to aid in the recovery of the federally endangered Florida bonneted bat. These outreach efforts have reached over 12,000 citizens across South Florida, increasing awareness of the species. The Bat Lab has now created 18 secure occupied custom designed roosts across the urban and suburban areas of Miami-Dade County where the species population is steadily growing. Twenty-two long-term acoustic monitoring sites have been established to better understand the bat’s behavior and distribution resulting in over 15 million bat calls analyzed.
