A Framework for Progressing Animal Welfare

Zoo Miami is committed to promoting positive welfare for the animals in our care by focusing on the following components of animal welfare:

Nutrition

A suitable, species-appropriate diet will be provided in a way that ensures full health and vigor, both behaviorally and physically

Environment

Animals will experience an appropriate environment that encourages opportunities to be active and promotes comfort and safety

Health

Animals will have the opportunity to experience good physical health including access to a wellness program as well as rapid diagnosis and treatment of injury/disease to ensure ongoing robustness and vitality through all life stages

Behavior

Quality habitats and appropriate social groupings will be provided that encourage species-appropriate behaviors at natural frequencies and of appropriate diversity while meeting the social and developmental needs of each animal

Choice and control

Animals will have an opportunity to make meaningful choices throughout their day to seek out and achieve a positive welfare state

Mental state

Animals will have ample opportunity to experience positive emotional states and minimize negative experiences and emotional states

If you believe this to be a potential animal emergency, please contact Zoo Security Base at 305-251-0400 and they will notify the appropriate staff members immediately. 

All submitted forms will be addressed by the Animal Wellbeing Committee (AWC). The AWC will create a plan of action within 30 days or earlier if the situation is deemed urgent.
