Our two boys, brothers Jabari and Kuami, were born September. 6, 2007 at the Racine Zoological Park in Racine, Wisconsin, and arrived at Miami Metrozoo November 30, 2008.
Weights for lions vary quite a bit but a general range is 350-500 lbs for males and 250-300 for females. In the wild their main diet consists of antelope and zebra, whereas at the zoo they get a processed meat that contains added vitamins and minerals.
Lions hunt cooperatively, with the females doing most of the work. The initial charge of a hunting lion only lasts about 164 to 328 feet, and if the prey is quick enough to keep ahead of the lion for that distance, the lion will usually abandon the hunt.
Lions sleep and rest up to 20-21 hours per day. Most lions live in prides that can range up to 30 members and sometimes more. As males mature, they will leave the pride and sometimes join with other males to form bachelor coalitions.
